My Dearest Light-Bearers,
One thing I've been pondering this week is this certain patch in my back garden where nothing seems to grow.
Everything around it? Flourishing. Tomatoes reaching skyward, swiss chard unfurling its colorful stems, zucchini spreading its broad leaves with confidence.
But this one spot? Barren.
I've changed the soil. Added fish compost with all its oceanic goodness—seaweed and vitamins and everything a seed could possibly desire.
Still nothing.
And then it hit me like the first crisp breeze of autumn...
That patch is where I planted broccoli.
Not for me. For my mother.
(Insert flashbacks of childhood dinner standoffs, me staring down those little green trees on my plate, refusing to budge until bedtime threatened...)
The revelation washed over me like spring rain: I planted those seeds without faith. I planted from obligation, not anticipation.
And isn't that just like life sometimes?
The places where we're just "going through the motions" remain stubbornly empty.
The relationships we nurture out of duty rather than delight seem to wither.
The dreams we pursue because we "should" rather than because they make our hearts sing...
They struggle to take root.
As I stood there, looking at my bald garden patch, I thought about the scarves we create at Love's Pure Light. Each one begins as a blank canvas—just threads and possibilities. But we pour such faith into every stitch. We believe in the beauty that will emerge.
We envision them wrapped around your shoulders during cool Canadian evenings. We imagine the colors brightening gray winter days. We picture them catching summer breezes as you explore new paths.
That's the difference, isn't it?
Faith is what waters the garden and makes seeds grow.
I wonder... where are the "broccoli patches" in your life right now?
Those areas where, if you're truly honest with yourself, your heart isn't fully invested?
-
Maybe it's a relationship you're maintaining out of obligation.
-
Maybe it's a career path you chose to please someone else.
-
Maybe it's even something as simple as a daily habit you've been told is "good for you" but your spirit resists.
What would happen if you planted new seeds there—seeds of genuine desire, watered with faith and expectation?
I'm learning this myself. Yesterday, I went back to that barren spot, knelt down in the soil, and had a little chat with those reluctant broccoli seeds.
"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I've been resisting you because of childhood memories and obligation. But what if I imagine you transformed into something delightful? What if I picture the most glorious broccoli salad with toasted almonds and cranberries and all the things that make my heart sing?"
I know it sounds silly. But something shifted in me.
And this morning? The tiniest green sprouts were pushing through the soil.
I can't help but think about our upcoming Great Canadian Adventure Tour (launching June 15th!)...
Each scarf in this collection represents a different Canadian landscape—from the rugged shores of Newfoundland to the majestic Rockies of Alberta.
But what makes this collection truly special isn't just the designs.
It's the faith we've poured into each one.
-
Faith that these scarves will become part of your stories.
-
Faith that they'll accompany you on your own great adventures.
-
Faith that when you wrap one around your shoulders, you'll feel both the embrace of this beautiful country and the courage to explore it.
So today, my question for you is simple:
Where do you need to replace obligation with faithful anticipation?
What "broccoli patch" in your life is waiting for you to believe in it?
And how might your perspective shift if you looked at it through eyes of possibility rather than duty?
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Just reply in the comments section below and share your own garden wisdom.
Until next week, may you water all your dreams with faith...
With warmth and light,
Cydney.
